Probably best known as a Bodhrán player, Martin has won All-Scotland, All-Britain and All-Ireland titles on Bodhrán and is widely recognised as one of today’s leading exponents of the instrument.
He graduated in 2002 with an honours degree in Music from Strathclyde University, and since then, has gone on to become one of the most in demand Bodhrán players in the country.
An experienced performer, Martin has played with the Michael McGoldrick Band, Flook and Deaf Shepherd amongst others.
A seasoned recording musician, Martin has appeared on numerous albums recently including releases from Dochas, Julie Fowlis, Claire Mann & Aaron Jones, Emily Smith, Angus Lyon & Ruaridh Campbell, Brolum and James Ross. (See the discography page for a more complete list).
Martin grew up listening to and playing Irish music at home, with encouragement from his parents, who both played music as well, whilst at school he was playing in Rock & Pop groups on drums and became the "in-house" drummer for all the school shows/events. Having this diversity is what makes his playing so unique. At University, he majored on Drum Kit, studying Latin, Afro-Cuban, Funk and Jazz. At this time, he also started to take the bodhrán more seriously, integrating different genres with the traditional music he had grown up with.
